Maya Nepal up for a cause

We recently witnessed a very noble program at Maya Nepal-a rehabilitation centre for Drug and HIV infected. This noble program was organized to make people aware about the condition of people who were recovering from drug addiction. The program sought to inform the mass outsideNirnaya At Maya Nepal Event the rehabilitation center about the social problems faced by the people infected with HIV and people recovering from drugs. Formally, the program’s was about “stigma and discrimination” and it sought to “encourage and inspire”. And inspired we were, with personalities like Rajesh Hamal, Nirnaya Shrestha also known as Naughty Soul Kid (NSK), Ex-cabinet minister- Dr.Bamsidhar Mishra, Mr.Tadaashi Fujiwara-Japanese Embassy Chief Consular and last but not the least Mr. Mohan Rana-Sub-Inspector of the area.

Maya Nepal is a rehabilitation centre established in the year 2062 B.S at Hattiban, Lalitpur. It was founded by Mr. Nirajan Khadka who himself was a drug abuser, but then cut clean and founded this rehabilitation centre to help others. Maya Nepal as the name suggests is all about Love, claims Nirajan. Maya Nepal believes in treatment instead of punishment. The atmosphere is very cool and calm and there are slogans all over the place to encourage people getting treatment there. Around 300 people have been admitted and the staff at Maya Nepal claim that 80% of them have fully recovered or cut clean. Currently there are around 25 people recovering from drug abuse at Maya Nepal, and all seem highly motivated and willing to give up drugs.

The program started by welcoming the guests and then lighting the candles of hope. The program's MC Rajesh Hamalwas Aanamika a VJ from Nepal1. Then we had speakers from Maya Nepal talk about the social problems faced by them. They explained how they went back “CLEAN” just to find out that the “Outside World” was not ready to accept them. Then the guests poured their opinions about drug abuse and the problems. Their speeches were highly encouraging and inspiring. It seemed that the staff at Maya Nepal chose the perfect people as guests. The judges were from different sectors. Rajesh Hamal and NSK were from our very own media line. Then there was Mr.Tadaashi Fujiwara-an international guest, Dr.Bamsidhar Mishra- from the political sector and Mr. Mohan Rana- from the law sector. The speakers talked about the support needed from all the sectors, especially from the media to help fully recover from drugs.

The program not only showed that the people admitted at Maya Nepal or any rehabilitation centre for that matter were all trying to give up drugs and for that they need moral support from all of us. The program showed that there are people like Rajesh Hamal who’s the drug ambassador for the second year in a row and NSk who’s actively involved with many charity organizations, have a feeling of responsibility towards the society. Their speeches showed how much they really care about other people in the society. The program also showed the power of media, as Rajesh Hamal and NSK, both public figures were able inspire people to lead the right path and not to lose hope just because the society has rejected them now. The society’s always there, it’s always trying to drag you down but don’t give in.”KEEP COMING BACK”.
